In THE MASTER BUILDER, Ibsen consciously sets out on a revolutionary plan to re-make his theatre, in form and content. The eponymous Solness, whom Ibsen called “a man somewhat akin to me,” is a middle-aged artist at the peak of his career. He is married to a strong-willed, duty-bound wife with whom he shares no passion, and he indulges in sexually-charged liaisons with much younger women. He is tormented by the sure knowledge that his great luck must, at any moment, be paid for, and by guilt over the many people he trampled on his climb to the summit. Certain that the hungry, antagonistic next generation will topple him, Solness seizes upon a partnership with a young admirer, and together they forge a dangerous plan for true happiness.
