Classics in the Classroom

Overview:
Classics in the Classroom is not simply a theatre appreciation course for high school students. One of the core values of The Pearl is the belief that theatre is anything but elitist. Instead, we see theatre as a glimpse into the inherited wisdom and shared ancestry of all humanity. Therefore, in order for theatre to remain relevant, we must guarantee that all members of our contemporary community are active within it. Inner city youth are a part of the collective identity we explore and therefore are vital to the dialogue. We simply provide the material and foster the growth of imagination and curiosity. Through this, we firmly believe that we are providing the building blocks that these students will use to imagine and create a better tomorrow not only for themselves, but for their community.

Program Components:
- Students attend all five productions of the season, including interactive post-performance talk-backs.
-Members of The Resident Acting Company provide pre and post-performance in-school workshops.
-A Playgoer's Supplement and study guide are provided to each student.
-Mentorship programs are offered to those students interested in careers in theatre.

Current Classics in the Classroom Partners:

- Young Women's Leadership School of Harlem
- Washington Irving High School
- Bayard Rustin Educational Complex
- Notre Dame High School
