FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
After five seasons with The Pearl, Shira Beckerman has stepped down from her managing director position with the company and accepted an offer to become Managing Director of the Philadelphia Theatre Company.
“We are delighted for Shira and know that this is an exciting opportunity for her,” said artistic director J. R. Sullivan. “Philadelphia Theatre Company is a vital component to the vibrant Philadelphia theatre scene and Shira brings a wealth of expertise and energy to them. Of course, we will miss her tremendously at The Pearl while we wish her all success and happiness in her new venture.”
Joining The Pearl in 2006, Shira managed the transition to new leadership as J. R. Sullivan succeeded founder Shepard Sobel and became Artistic Director in 2009. Highlights in her management tenure include overseeing the company’s expansion of programming, the relocation of The Pearl’s headquarters and rehearsal space, and the company’s move to the New York City Center performance venue. Prior to The Pearl, Shira served as associate director of marketing and assistant director of development at Yale Repertory Theatre, as well as holding leadership positions at Ensemble Company for the Performing Arts, Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Boston Conservatory, and Brandeis/New Rep ON TOUR. Shira holds an M.F.A. in Theater Management from the Yale School of Drama.
“My time with The Pearl has been an extraordinary journey and I cannot wait to see the success of the company in the years to come,” said Shira. “I look forward to joining that special family of Pearl patrons in the audience as often as I can for an exceptional 2011-2012 season at City Center Stage II. I will miss the New York City arts community but hope to see friendly and familiar faces down in Philly in the future. Everyone in the Pearl community is a welcome guest at the Philadelphia Theatre Company – and I promise to take anyone who makes the trip out for cheesesteak, too!”
The Pearl is undertaking a national search for Shira’s successor and plans to announce the company’s next Managing Director this fall.
